Speaker Series: Does Education Matter in Policing panel

This session will explore the role of education in shaping effective, ethical law enforcement.

Topics include the potential benefits of degree requirements, specialized training, and ongoing education as tools for developing well-rounded officers. Panelists will also discuss the impact of advanced education on decision-making, empathy, and community engagement, as well as the balance between academic training and practical experience in the field. 

The panel will be moderated by James McElvain, Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Safety program, and it will include the following participants: 

  • Rosa Brooks, who currently serves as Georgetown Law’s Associate Dean for Centers and Institutes and as co-director of Georgetown’s Center on Innovations in Public Safety.
  • Christopher Easton, who currently serves as Assistant Chief at University of Virginia’s Police Department.
  • Dr. Oscar Odom, who currently serves as an Associate Professor for the Master of Public Safety program.
