Sara McClellan, PhD, MPA

Sara McClellan teaches and consults with individuals and organizations working to navigate unprecedented levels of change and uncertainty with curiosity, courage, and mental and emotional agility. She emphasizes exploration and action in support of the public good across sectors and professions because she believes we need a whole society response to address problems such as climate change, political polarization, and mental health crises.

Dr. McClellan’s approach draws on her cross-disciplinary academic background in Organizational Communication and Public Policy & Administration as well as her 20-plus years of experience as a practitioner and consultant. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Professional Studies and Coordinator for the University of Virginia Public Administration Certificate Program. She also consults with organizations on behalf of Engaged Advisors and Org Management Group. Dr. McClellan uses a variety of tools and disciplinary lenses to engage in co-inquiry and co-creation as she has found all problems and possibilities are rooted in local context and are generally best approached via curious inquiry and selective adoption of tools and practices by critical stakeholders.

Before coming to UVA, Dr. McClellan served as the Hazel Cramer Endowed Chair in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Sacramento State University, where she taught and conducted applied research on organizational communication, planning, leadership, and stakeholder engagement. Prior, she taught as an adjunct professor for the Price School of Public Policy and the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California (USC).

Dr. McClellan has served in multiple practitioner and consulting roles. She worked as Associate Director and Organizational Development Specialist for the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd, an educational research, development and service agency. She also served as a deputy county administrative officer, personnel director, and First 5 director in northern California.

​Dr. McClellan earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder, her Master of Public Administration from USC, and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from CSU Monterey Bay.

Dr. McClellan enjoys teaching in a variety of formats and has more than a decade of experience in designing and delivering online classes.

In her spare time, Dr. McClellan loves hiking, dancing, cooking and eating with friends, and reading detective novels (slowly) in Spanish. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her husband, Bryon, and their two amazing cats.

Gary Brooks, DBA, CPA

Dr. Gary Brooks’ career includes accounting and finance work with leading defense contractors and over 13 years of active-duty service in the military. Primarily, his work for the last 25 years has been in support of the intelligence community. His focus has been on the federal budget process to include budget reporting and execution.  He has been teaching the last twelve years with the last six years teaching full time. 

Originally from Ohio, Gary has earned an associate degree, bachelor's degree, two master's degrees (MBA and MPA), and a doctorate (DBA). Gary holds the following certifications: Virginia Certified Public Accountant (CPA); Certified Internal Auditor (CIA); Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP); Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM); Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA); and Certified Defense Financial Manager with Acquisition Specialty (CDFM-A).

Dillon Taylor

Chief of Staff & Senior Counsel, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management

Dillon Taylor is currently the Chief of Staff & Senior Counsel at the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Dillon previously worked as an honors attorney with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board, where he was involved in national and international policy, planning, regulatory, litigation and legislative matters. Dillon obtained his law degree from the University of Richmond, where he is now an adjunct professor of law. Prior to law school, he worked as a professional firefighter assigned to the special operations team focused on large-scale, multi-agency responses. Dillon is a graduate of Harvard's National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, FEMA's Vanguard Executive Crisis Leadership Fellowship, Columbia's Leading with Impact Program, and the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security Executive Leaders Program (Ellen Gordon Awardee). Dillon is also a member of the Aspen Institute's Aspen Strategy Group Rising Leaders Program. He volunteers his time as a board member and board advisor with two national organizations. Most importantly, Dillon is a proud husband as well as a father of three incredible kids. 

Robert B Neller headshot

Robert B. Neller

Professor of Practice

General Robert B. Neller served as the 37th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps from September 2015 to July 2019.

He retired from active duty in 2019. A native of East Lansing, Michigan, Neller graduated from the University of Virginia in 1975 with a degree in history and speech communication. He later earned a master’s degree from Pepperdine University in human resources management. After graduating from Virginia, Neller went directly into the Marine Corps via the Platoon Leader Class.

A career Infantry Officer, Neller has commanded from Platoon through Service Component HQs. He has been assigned as a General Officer in each of the three USMC active infantry Divisions and commanded the 3rd Marine Division. He is a joint qualified officer having served in Europe at SHAPE as a NATO staff officer and as the J3/COO of the Joint Staff. Operationally, Neller participated in Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In OIF 05-07 during 2006, he served as the Deputy Commanding General for Multi-National Force West in Iraq’s Anbar Province.

Upon retirement, Neller moved to the Austin, Texas area where he is involved in consulting, teaching, motivational speaking and serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. One of his primary consulting activities has been in the training of law enforcement personnel in their response to an active shooter situation and other challenging scenarios facing today’s law enforcement personnel. To improve police performance, he has become an advocate of virtual reality simulation to enhance and reinforce police training and policies, especially the de-escalation of a situation resulting in a non-kinetic outcome.

Gary Roseman, PhD, CPA, CFP

Gary Roseman works as an economist in Washington, D.C., and teaches the insurance planning and capstone courses. Previously, he taught economics in the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. He was a Fulbright research scholar in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, a Rotary Foundation grantee in Irkutsk, Russia, and worked in research projects in Central Asia. Roseman holds a Ph.D. from Emory University, a CPA license (Alabama), and is a CFP certificant.

Melissa M. Lubin

Dean

Melissa Lubin joined the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies as Dean in September 2022. 

Previously, she served as Dean of Professional & Continuing Education and Chief Economic Engagement Officer at James Madison University. In this role, she oversaw a continuum of learning through every stage and phase of life, work and play, including the Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree completion programs for non-traditional students, Online and Distance Learning graduate degrees and certificate programs, Non-credit professional development programming, Youth enrichment programs, the Lifelong Learning Institute, and the Madison Center for Community Development. Melissa served as the university champion for community engagement and economic development, linking the needs of business, government, community and education through expanding collaboration and public-private partnerships. She is a “practitioner-scholar” who infuses an entrepreneurial spirit to her work in the academy.

Before James Madison University, Melissa was at Virginia Tech, where she was the director of the university’s Commonwealth Campus Centers in Richmond, Newport News, and Virginia Beach, where they created, customized, and facilitated a series of human development programming for organizations in the private and public sector. She is a credentialed executive coach through the International Coach Federation, a master practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and certified in the EQi emotional intelligence assessment. Prior to Virginia Tech, she held leadership positions in the private sector, including the Apollo Group, Circuit City Inc., and This End Up Furniture.

Melissa earned a Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development from Virginia Tech’s School of Human Development, a Master in Business Administration from Georgia Southern University, and a Bachelor of General Studies from Armstrong State College. Her research interests include andragogy, mentoring, and coaching. She is passionate about learning beyond the degree, empowering individuals to expand their own body of knowledge throughout adulthood to positively impact the well-being of our society. 

Melissa and her husband Neil (Regional Sales Manager with Tension, Inc.) have a son, D.C. who is a freshman at James Madison University. They share their home with a Siamese cat (Gilligan) and a border collie (Skipper). In her personal time, Melissa loves to spend time with her family relaxing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay.

Sheila Brooks

Sheila Brooks, CPCM, PMP, JD

Sheila Brooks is the Senior Director of Compliance and Contracts for Grant Thornton Public Sector LLC (“Grant Thornton”). She started her career interning at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Acquisition and Procurement. She then went on to work in Commercial, International, State and Local and Federal Government Contracting in the Private Sector for Commercial, Information Technology, and Non-Profit organizations. She obtained a Bachelors of Arts (BA) in History at James Madison University and a Juris Doctor (JD) at the College of William & Mary. Sheila is a member of the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) and the Project Management Institute (PMI) and holds both the Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM) and the Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications from those organizations respectively as well as being a licensed attorney in the District of Columbia.  Sheila is an adjunct Professor at the University of Virginia teaching Federal Government Acquisition.

Marvin “Ben” Haiman

Executive Director, Center for Public Safety and Justice

Mr. Marvin Haiman is an Assistant Professor and the Executive Director of Public Safety and Justice at the University of Virginia. He is also a Visiting Fellow and Research Scholar with Rutger’s University. Haiman served as the Chief of Staff for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. between 2021 and 2024. In this capacity, Haiman oversaw daily operations of the Executive Office of the Chief of Police and was responsible for broad agency management and implementing strategic agency objectives.

Haiman was responsible for several organizational units including the Office of Communications, Office of General Counsel, Office of Wellness and the Professional Development Bureau. He served as the Executive Director of the Professional Development Bureau between 2017 – 2021, leading the Recruiting Division, Metropolitan Police Academy Division, Human Resource Management Division, Disciplinary Review Division, Testing and Assessment Division, Equal Employment Opportunity Division, Office of Communications and the Strategic Engagement Office (Volunteer Services).

Prior to being named Executive Director, Haiman served in a variety of capacities between 2015-2017, including developing the agency’s Office of Volunteer Coordination, serving as Chief of Staff for the Technical Services Division tasked with a broad range of IT operations, and Chief of Staff for the Strategic Services Bureau supporting and leading the administration of police recruitment, training, policy and volunteer service matters for the Department.

Prior to returning to the Metropolitan Police Department, Haiman served as Director for the Homeland Security Advisory Council for the United States Department of Homeland Security, where he established several key task forces for the Secretary (e.g., Foreign Fighters, Integrity & Use of Force). Prior to his Federal service, Haiman led the Recruiting Division for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., among various other positions. Haiman was responsible for restructuring the sworn hiring process, decreasing the amount of time it took to process candidates while increasing the quality of those officers hired.

Haiman graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a master’s degree in management through the Police Executive Leadership Program. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa and received designation as a Certified Public Management Program through George Washington University, as well as certification in Strategic Project Management. Haiman is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security’s Executive Leadership Program. He received recognition by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 2020 as a 40 under 40 recipient and the prestigious Gary P. Hayes Award by the Police Executive Research Forum. Haiman graduated from the Metropolitan Police Academy and continues his police service as a reserve police officer with the Metropolitan Police Department. Haiman resides with his family in Washington, D.C.

Jimmy Adiansyah

Jimmy Ardiansyah, MS

Jimmy Ardiansyah, pronounced "r-d-an-sa," is an experienced solutions architect and technical leader. He has over 18 years of experience in various roles, including big data, database administrator, data engineer, high-performance computing architect, big data and analytics platform architect, and multi/hybrid cloud solutions architect. He is a certified cloud architect for Google Cloud, Microsoft Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and IBM Cloud at the professional level. He is also a senior management consultant at IBM and has advised customers in a variety of industries, including telecommunications, healthcare, government agencies, and energy and utilities.

He has a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) in information technology from Middle Georgia State University with a focus on cloud computing and a Master of Science (M.S) in information technology from Arkansas Tech University. His research focuses on multi/hybrid cloud computing architecture, large-scale cloud adoption, and cloud security. In his leisure time, he likes reading about science and technology, pushing himself beyond his comfort zone, and traveling to national state parks with his family. He believes in continuous learning and practicing new skills in the IT business, which is always changing and changing rapidly. Finally, and most significantly, he welcomes opportunities for learning and growth, motivated to broaden his knowledge through the experiences of others.

Yvonne Hampton

Instructor, Certified Financial Planning

Yvonne Hampton, PhD

Dr. Yvonne Hampton holds a Ph.D. in personal financial planning from The University of Missouri. Additionally, she holds a B.S. in Economics, a Master’s in Business Administration, a Master of Arts in Economics, Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning, and a graduate certificate in Housing and Financial Counseling. With over 15 years of experience in teaching personal financial planning, and economics, financial counseling, financial coaching, and financial therapy.

Dr. Hampton has amassed an impressive body of work inclusive of research, facilitating seminars classes and workshops in the university, community, and corporate settings. Dr. Hampton’s research has focused on the intersectionality of mental health disorders and financial planning. She has utilized this research to inform a variety of practitioners on ways to effectively support and counsel their own clients for more positive financial outcomes.

Douglas Mujeye

Douglas Mujeye, PhD

Dr. Douglas Mujeye’s background is in software engineering, with over 20 years of experience. He has been in his current with Staffmark Inc. since 2007. Prior to this role, Douglas was a consultant, which gave him experience across a variety of technologies and industries. His areas of specialization include software application solutions for manufacturing, education, construction, healthcare and banking.
 
Douglas has worked in higher education since 2007 and has taught a variety of courses including Object Oriented Programming – Java, Database Systems, Programming in C++, Introduction to Computing, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint, Cloud Computing, Data Structures, Database Systems, VB.NET, C#, HTML, ASP.NET, Security, IT Capstone, Python, MEAN stack, Software Engineering, Mobile Platform Software Development(JAVA), Game Programming(XBOX – Microsoft), Computer Graphics, Practical Game Development.
 
As an educator, his objective is to be a motivator to all his students to see them develop their personal learning and research interests as well as critical thinking skills. It is his objective to establish and always maintain a student-centric atmosphere while in the classroom. Douglas has a Doctor of Computer Science from Colorado Technical University, a Ph.D. (ABD) in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University, and Master of Science in Information Systems from Northern Kentucky University. His research interests are in Software Requirements Engineering and Decision Support Systems.

    Ben Abitz is the Director of Wealth Planning at TMRW Wealth. TMRW is a Greensboro, NC based wealth planning firm focused on serving business owners, corporate executives, wealthy families, and foundations.

    Ben graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Ursinus College in Economics. Taking a less than traditional route, Ben coached college football at various levels early in his professional life. While coaching, Ben did make one trip to Charlottesville, suffering a loss at the hands of the Cavaliers. Upon transitioning careers, Ben knew financial planning was the best way to use his coach skills to guide people to long term success.

    Ben is a proud financial nerd and closely follows legislative changes, and shifts in the tax, estate, and investment landscape. He has experience at various levels of the industry, beginning at a large Wirehouse/Investment Bank, with a focus on investment management. He then transitioned to a Family Office managing nearly $2 billion, where they specialized in advanced tax and estate planning techniques, including the alphabet soup of trusts, GRATs, CRUTs, ILITs, IDGTs etc. He now leads TMRW’s wealth planning that aims to go deeper and manage the intersection of all the financial planning areas for complex clients and client families.

    Ben aims to meet students where they are, understanding that they come from various backgrounds. Some have been running their own RIA for years and have extensive planning experience, while others are career changers experiencing this material for the first time. Some are here simply for personal knowledge and growth. Ben works with each student to help them reach their goals and push them beyond.

    Michael P. Fischetti, JD

    Michael P. Fischetti is a consultant, instructor, researcher, experienced acquisition leader and subject matter expert in contract management.  He currently is a Professor of Program and Contract Management for the Defense Acquisition University, private training firms and the University of Virginia.  Michael has over 35 years of acquisition experience in management, policy, and contracting officer positions in all facets of government and agency policy development and implementation, oversight, program management, and procurement operations for services, weapon systems, and information technology for a variety of government and civilian organizations.  

    Michael was the executive director of the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) from 2012-2018.  NCMA is a professional association for those practicing contract management and related professions, located in Ashburn, Virginia. In that position, he was chief executive officer (CEO), with over 20,000 contracting and acquisition professionals, 111 chapters worldwide, an annual budget of approximately $7.5M, and a professional staff of 30. He managed conferences, education and certification programs; oversaw a variety of publications, including a monthly magazine, a scholarly journal, newsletters and instructional books and materials; revised the Contract Management Body of Knowledge and Contract Management Standard, obtaining American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accreditation.  

    Throughout his career, Michael supported various roles for NCMA on the national Board of Directors (2007–2012), serving on a variety of committees, including Chair of the Professional Standards and Ethics Committee, as well as various Board positions for the flagship Washington, DC Chapter.

    Prior to this position, Michael Fischetti was the component acquisition executive (CAE) for the $50B+ Military Healthcare System (MHS), responsible for program management and oversight, acquisition workforce management, and policy implementation. He was the head of contracting activity (HCA), responsible for managing all contracting for healthcare, information technology and supporting services contracts within DHA, coming from the Department of Energy, where he was director of their Office of Procurement and Assistance Policy for a $23B acquisition portfolio from 2004-2008.  Mr. Fischetti joined the Federal Senior Executive Service in 2006.  He has been a Federal Contracting Officer in several agencies, developed and implemented acquisition and financial assistance policy guidance and rulemakings and negotiated government and industry contractual positions.

    Michael’s formal education includes a Juris Doctor degree, an MS in national resource strategy from the National Defense University (NDU), an MA in business management from Central Michigan University, and a BA in economics and political science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Certified Association Executive (CAE), a Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM) and holds contracting and program management certifications from the Department of Defense.

    Michael is a member of the Procurement Round Table as well as the Senior Advisors to Government Executives Program (SAGE) within the Partnership for Public Service.  He also volunteers as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, the Arc of Loudoun; the Board of Directors of Banshee Reeks (Leesburg) chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists; Great Falls National Park; usher at Wolf Trap Farm Park and Ford’s Theater; and is a hike leader for Potomac Regional Outings of Sierra Club and the Northern Virginia Hiking Club.  He is married to Karen, has three grown children, two grandchildren and lives in Leesburg, Virginia. Michael enjoys hiking, exercising, traveling, reading and being at home.

    Executive Director, Center for Public Safety and Justice

    Mr. Marvin Haiman is an Assistant Professor and the Executive Director of Public Safety and Justice at the University of Virginia. He is also a Visiting Fellow and Research Scholar with Rutger’s University. Haiman served as the Chief of Staff for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. between 2021 and 2024. In this capacity, Haiman oversaw daily operations of the Executive Office of the Chief of Police and was responsible for broad agency management and implementing strategic agency objectives.

    Haiman was responsible for several organizational units including the Office of Communications, Office of General Counsel, Office of Wellness and the Professional Development Bureau. He served as the Executive Director of the Professional Development Bureau between 2017 – 2021, leading the Recruiting Division, Metropolitan Police Academy Division, Human Resource Management Division, Disciplinary Review Division, Testing and Assessment Division, Equal Employment Opportunity Division, Office of Communications and the Strategic Engagement Office (Volunteer Services).

    Prior to being named Executive Director, Haiman served in a variety of capacities between 2015-2017, including developing the agency’s Office of Volunteer Coordination, serving as Chief of Staff for the Technical Services Division tasked with a broad range of IT operations, and Chief of Staff for the Strategic Services Bureau supporting and leading the administration of police recruitment, training, policy and volunteer service matters for the Department.

    Prior to returning to the Metropolitan Police Department, Haiman served as Director for the Homeland Security Advisory Council for the United States Department of Homeland Security, where he established several key task forces for the Secretary (e.g., Foreign Fighters, Integrity & Use of Force). Prior to his Federal service, Haiman led the Recruiting Division for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., among various other positions. Haiman was responsible for restructuring the sworn hiring process, decreasing the amount of time it took to process candidates while increasing the quality of those officers hired.

    Haiman graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a master’s degree in management through the Police Executive Leadership Program. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa and received designation as a Certified Public Management Program through George Washington University, as well as certification in Strategic Project Management. Haiman is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security’s Executive Leadership Program. He received recognition by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 2020 as a 40 under 40 recipient and the prestigious Gary P. Hayes Award by the Police Executive Research Forum. Haiman graduated from the Metropolitan Police Academy and continues his police service as a reserve police officer with the Metropolitan Police Department. Haiman resides with his family in Washington, D.C.

Chittargi has over two decades of experience in the software engineering domain, specializing in designing and managing large-scale enterprise systems with a particular focus on cutting-edge technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Services (Azure and AWS), and various web-based and open-source technologies. 

    He is a Program Director at Microsoft, serving as the Azure Global Expansion Lead. In this capacity, Chittargi is responsible for devising and implementing strategies for launching and expanding Azure data centers globally. He oversees the entire process, partnering with various teams internally, from initial opportunity evaluation to the successful launch of data centers. 

    Chittagi holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Science in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. He is also certified by the Project Management Institute as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a PMI Certified Agile Practitioner (PMI-ACP).

From 2011 to 2022, she served as the 28th Chief Justice of California and led the judiciary as the chair of the Judicial Council—the constitutional policy and rule making body of the judicial branch—the first person of color and the second woman to do so. Before she was elected statewide as the Chief Justice of California, she served more than 20 years on California appellate and trial courts and was appointed or elevated to higher office by three governors. Earlier in her career she served as a deputy district attorney for the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and on the senior staff of Governor Deukmejian, first as deputy legal affairs secretary and later as a deputy legislative secretary.     Melissa Lubin joined the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies as Dean in September 2022. 

    Previously, she served as Dean of Professional & Continuing Education and Chief Economic Engagement Officer at James Madison University. In this role, she oversaw a continuum of learning through every stage and phase of life, work and play, including the Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree completion programs for non-traditional students, Online and Distance Learning graduate degrees and certificate programs, Non-credit professional development programming, Youth enrichment programs, the Lifelong Learning Institute, and the Madison Center for Community Development. Melissa served as the university champion for community engagement and economic development, linking the needs of business, government, community and education through expanding collaboration and public-private partnerships. She is a “practitioner-scholar” who infuses an entrepreneurial spirit to her work in the academy.

    Before James Madison University, Melissa was at Virginia Tech, where she was the director of the university’s Commonwealth Campus Centers in Richmond, Newport News, and Virginia Beach, where they created, customized, and facilitated a series of human development programming for organizations in the private and public sector. She is a credentialed executive coach through the International Coach Federation, a master practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and certified in the EQi emotional intelligence assessment. Prior to Virginia Tech, she held leadership positions in the private sector, including the Apollo Group, Circuit City Inc., and This End Up Furniture.

    Melissa earned a Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development from Virginia Tech’s School of Human Development, a Master in Business Administration from Georgia Southern University, and a Bachelor of General Studies from Armstrong State College. Her research interests include andragogy, mentoring, and coaching. She is passionate about learning beyond the degree, empowering individuals to expand their own body of knowledge throughout adulthood to positively impact the well-being of our society. 

    Melissa and her husband Neil (Regional Sales Manager with Tension, Inc.) have a son, D.C. who is a freshman at James Madison University. They share their home with a Siamese cat (Gilligan) and a border collie (Skipper). In her personal time, Melissa loves to spend time with her family relaxing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay.

    Ben Abitz is the Director of Wealth Planning at TMRW Wealth. TMRW is a Greensboro, NC based wealth planning firm focused on serving business owners, corporate executives, wealthy families, and foundations.

    Ben graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Ursinus College in Economics. Taking a less than traditional route, Ben coached college football at various levels early in his professional life. While coaching, Ben did make one trip to Charlottesville, suffering a loss at the hands of the Cavaliers. Upon transitioning careers, Ben knew financial planning was the best way to use his coach skills to guide people to long term success.

    Ben is a proud financial nerd and closely follows legislative changes, and shifts in the tax, estate, and investment landscape. He has experience at various levels of the industry, beginning at a large Wirehouse/Investment Bank, with a focus on investment management. He then transitioned to a Family Office managing nearly $2 billion, where they specialized in advanced tax and estate planning techniques, including the alphabet soup of trusts, GRATs, CRUTs, ILITs, IDGTs etc. He now leads TMRW’s wealth planning that aims to go deeper and manage the intersection of all the financial planning areas for complex clients and client families.

    Ben aims to meet students where they are, understanding that they come from various backgrounds. Some have been running their own RIA for years and have extensive planning experience, while others are career changers experiencing this material for the first time. Some are here simply for personal knowledge and growth. Ben works with each student to help them reach their goals and push them beyond.

She is also a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida. She holds a PhD and a Master of Arts degree in Communication from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Language from Universiti Putra Malaysia.     Michael “Bret” Hood spent 25 years as an FBI Special Agent investigating complex cases while specializing in financial crimes, corruption, and money laundering violations. Upon his retirement in 2016, Bret opened 21st Century Learning & Consulting, LLC, a training and consulting business designed to help prevent people from making the mistakes that lead that first lead them down the slippery slope.

    Bret was recruited to become an Association of Certified Fraud Examiners faculty member and was awarded the ACFE’s James R. Baker Speaker of the Year award in 2020. Bret was named the top-rated speaker at both the ACFE’s Global Fraud Conference as well as the Institute of Internal Auditor’s Global conference. In addition, Bret also serves as an adjunct professor of forensic accounting for Mt. St. Mary’s University and an adjunct professor of corporate governance and ethics for the University of Virginia. Bret has previously served as an adjunct professor of forensic accounting for the University of Virginia and Florida Gulf Coast University. Bret is also part of the Forensic Accounting Advisory Council at Mt. St. Mary’s University.

    Some of the top public and private entities in the world have sought out Bret to assist them in creating, adapting, and modifying anti-fraud, anti-corruption, and anti-money laundering programs in order to interweave the latest behavioral and neuroscience research into their prevention programs. She has a Master of Science in Computer Science and B.S. in Computer Science from the University of South Florida.     Laura is an active member of ISC2 Tampa Bay and a volunteer and committee team lead for the BSides Tampa Conference.     Thomas A. Bradshaw, DLS, is a Captain with the Virginia State Police and Commander of the Communications Division. He is also a lecturer for the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies, Master of Public Safety Program. Dr. Bradshaw is an accomplished, seasoned law enforcement leader with a proactive, forward-thinking approach to leading complex, high-profile missions. His long career has focused on teaching and serving in the criminal justice profession as a Police Officer in Suffolk, Virginia, and with the Virginia State Police for the past three decades. He has taught for over three decades as a Virginia State Certified General, Emergency Driving and Executive Protection Specialist Instructor.

    Dr. Bradshaw's background includes 16 years of Emergency Medical Services, 7 years assigned to the Virginia State Police SWAT team as a Master Operator, and 13 years on the Executive Protective Detail for the Governor of Virginia. He has vast experience with high-profile events and has led and coordinated Gubernatorial Inaugurations of the Governor of Virginia, Presidential Inaugurations, and National Conventions. Furthermore, he has supervised, advanced and protected Governors during numerous trade missions worldwide, working closely with the U.S. Embassies and foreign governmental agencies.  

    Dr. Bradshaw holds a Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Liberty University, a Master of Public Safety from the University of Virginia, a Master of Public Administration from Troy University, and a Bachelor of Science in Governmental Administration from Christopher Newport University. He is a 2006 graduate of the UVA National Criminal Justice Command College and the Harvard University School of Business Executive Leadership Principles. William Paige is the Program Manager for the Center of Public and Justice at the University of Virginia.

William’s commitment to public service began as a civilian intern with the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. in the Court Liaison Division and Office of Volunteer Coordination, promoting the Department’s community relation initiatives. He also interned and worked in the Executive Office of the Mayor of Washington, D.C. During his time as an Associate in the Office of Federal and Regional Affairs, William engaged with federal and regional stakeholders to advance the interest of the District of Columbia on a wide range of policy issues. As an Associate Director in the Mayor’s Office of Talent and Appointments, William recruited and managed appointments within the Mayor’s cabinet and staff. His portfolio included, among others, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety & Justice and the Office of the Senior Advisor. He also advised certain Mayoral nominees through the D.C. Council confirmation process to numerous volunteer boards and commissions.

During his time at the Georgetown University Law Center, William was a research assistant focusing on federal securities litigation, a summer associate at two international law firms, served on the Executive Board of the Georgetown Black Law Student’s Association, and a student attorney in the Federal Legislation Clinic focusing on anti-hunger policy and advocacy.

William joins the Center for Public Safety & Justice from private legal practice where he focused on antitrust & competition law while maintaining an active pro bono practice. 

William graduated magna cum laude from St. John’s University with a major in Criminal Justice and a minor in Business Law. He earned his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. 

In his free time, William enjoys exercising, reading non-fiction, and traveling.

Marvin “Ben” Haiman

Executive Director, Center for Public Safety and Justice

Mr. Marvin Haiman is an Assistant Professor and the Executive Director of Public Safety and Justice at the University of Virginia. He is also a Visiting Fellow and Research Scholar with Rutger’s University. Haiman served as the Chief of Staff for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. between 2021 and 2024. In this capacity, Haiman oversaw daily operations of the Executive Office of the Chief of Police and was responsible for broad agency management and implementing strategic agency objectives.

Haiman was responsible for several organizational units including the Office of Communications, Office of General Counsel, Office of Wellness and the Professional Development Bureau. He served as the Executive Director of the Professional Development Bureau between 2017 – 2021, leading the Recruiting Division, Metropolitan Police Academy Division, Human Resource Management Division, Disciplinary Review Division, Testing and Assessment Division, Equal Employment Opportunity Division, Office of Communications and the Strategic Engagement Office (Volunteer Services).

Prior to being named Executive Director, Haiman served in a variety of capacities between 2015-2017, including developing the agency’s Office of Volunteer Coordination, serving as Chief of Staff for the Technical Services Division tasked with a broad range of IT operations, and Chief of Staff for the Strategic Services Bureau supporting and leading the administration of police recruitment, training, policy and volunteer service matters for the Department.

Prior to returning to the Metropolitan Police Department, Haiman served as Director for the Homeland Security Advisory Council for the United States Department of Homeland Security, where he established several key task forces for the Secretary (e.g., Foreign Fighters, Integrity & Use of Force). Prior to his Federal service, Haiman led the Recruiting Division for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., among various other positions. Haiman was responsible for restructuring the sworn hiring process, decreasing the amount of time it took to process candidates while increasing the quality of those officers hired.

Haiman graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a master’s degree in management through the Police Executive Leadership Program. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa and received designation as a Certified Public Management Program through George Washington University, as well as certification in Strategic Project Management. Haiman is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security’s Executive Leadership Program. He received recognition by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 2020 as a 40 under 40 recipient and the prestigious Gary P. Hayes Award by the Police Executive Research Forum. Haiman graduated from the Metropolitan Police Academy and continues his police service as a reserve police officer with the Metropolitan Police Department. Haiman resides with his family in Washington, D.C.

Jimmy Ardiansyah, MS

Jimmy Ardiansyah, pronounced "r-d-an-sa," is an experienced solutions architect and technical leader. He has over 18 years of experience in various roles, including big data, database administrator, data engineer, high-performance computing architect, big data and analytics platform architect, and multi/hybrid cloud solutions architect. He is a certified cloud architect for Google Cloud, Microsoft Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and IBM Cloud at the professional level. He is also a senior management consultant at IBM and has advised customers in a variety of industries, including telecommunications, healthcare, government agencies, and energy and utilities.

He has a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) in information technology from Middle Georgia State University with a focus on cloud computing and a Master of Science (M.S) in information technology from Arkansas Tech University. His research focuses on multi/hybrid cloud computing architecture, large-scale cloud adoption, and cloud security. In his leisure time, he likes reading about science and technology, pushing himself beyond his comfort zone, and traveling to national state parks with his family. He believes in continuous learning and practicing new skills in the IT business, which is always changing and changing rapidly. Finally, and most significantly, he welcomes opportunities for learning and growth, motivated to broaden his knowledge through the experiences of others.

With over 30 years in emergency services, Trebia Rodgers is a seasoned expert in emergency management and telecommunications. A BETST Certified Telecommunicator Instructor, she has trained countless professionals in critical response areas and in so doing, ensures excellence in emergency communications. As a Mississippi Certified Emergency Manager since 1998, Trebia has led responses to major disasters, including Hurricane Andrew, the 1994 Ice Storm, Hurricane Katrina and the 2019 Mississippi Flood. Her crisis leadership has earned her multiple awards such as the Mississippi Emergency Management Director’s Award for Excellence (2024) and the BETST Award (2001). During her time as a Grenada County EMA & 911 Director, she enhanced emergency response operations and community preparedness. Trebia serves on the Commercial Mobile Radio Service Board (appointed by Governor Tate Reeves) and is an active member of the MS 911 Coordinators Board. She has also served multiple terms on the Mississippi Civil Defense / Emergency Management Association Board. Trebia is committed to public safety and continues to shape the next generation of emergency responders and strengthen community resilience.

Charlotte Matthews, MFA

Charlotte Matthews is author of five poetry collections, a novel, and a memoir, which was a finalist for Indie awards best creative non-fiction. Her work has appeared in such journals as American Poetry Review, The Mississippi Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review, and Story South. Her honors include fellowships from The Chautauqua Institute, The Sewanee Writers Conference, The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and The Virginia Center for Creative Arts.  Recipient of the Adele F. Robertson Award for Excellence in Teaching and an associate professor, Matthews teaches writing classes and directs the Writing Center for SCPS.

Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye, BA, JD

Tani Cantil-Sakauye is president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, where she holds the Walter and Esther Hewlett Chair in Understanding California’s Future. From 2011 to 2022, she served as the 28th Chief Justice of California and led the judiciary as the chair of the Judicial Council—the constitutional policy and rule making body of the judicial branch—the first person of color and the second woman to do so. Before she was elected statewide as the Chief Justice of California, she served more than 20 years on California appellate and trial courts and was appointed or elevated to higher office by three governors. Earlier in her career she served as a deputy district attorney for the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and on the senior staff of Governor Deukmejian, first as deputy legal affairs secretary and later as a deputy legislative secretary. She holds a BA and a JD from the University of California, Davis.

Kiran Chittargi

Kiran Chittargi serves as the Program Coordinator for UVA’s Cloud Computing Certificate. Chittargi has over two decades of experience in the software engineering domain, specializing in designing and managing large-scale enterprise systems with a particular focus on cutting-edge technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Services (Azure and AWS), and various web-based and open-source technologies. 

He is a Program Director at Microsoft, serving as the Azure Global Expansion Lead. In this capacity, Chittargi is responsible for devising and implementing strategies for launching and expanding Azure data centers globally. He oversees the entire process, partnering with various teams internally, from initial opportunity evaluation to the successful launch of data centers. 

Chittagi holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Science in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. He is also certified by the Project Management Institute as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a PMI Certified Agile Practitioner (PMI-ACP).
